If you typically purchase your hardware items from big box chains, you may not be aware of one of Raleigh's small business gems - Burke Brothers Hardware on Hillsborough Street, just past the fairgrounds - in business since 1936, but with a new HUGE selection of everything from paint to Lodge cast iron pans. You may be surprised to find that the selection is actually better than the chains and the difference is you will receive personal attention and professional advice on every subject from plumbing to electrical to gardening supplies. If you haven't visited since their recent expansion, do yourself and the local economy a favor and stop by (and be sure to say hello to the large Siamese cat "security guard").
