Event Description:
The concept behind Urban Ink Magazine is to give a voice to people of color who are a part of the tattoo culture. Recognizing this growth in the industry, the publishers of Urban Ink believed the time was right to launch a magazine that would celebrate every facet of the tattoo culture, but with the twist of keeping the publication's focus on the Urban community. With a circulation of 200,000 copies, each issue of Urban Ink brings its ever-growing readership celebrity features and interviews. Among the top figures in the entertainment world to appear on the cover of UI are Lil Wayne, The Game, Birdman and Jim Jones. The list of celebrity and sports figures to be captured in the pages of Urban Ink also includes the stars of the NFL, NBA, World Wrestling Entertainment and U.S. Olympic Teams. Now, over the course of the next three months, Urban Ink will select one ReverbNation artist a week to receive the spotlight feature on the homepage of Ubran Ink Magazine. Selection Criteria: Quality and quantity of tattoos, Pictures in press kit must adequately display your ink, Ability to provide stories behind your ink, Marketability, Originality, and Overall Likeability About Urban Ink Magazine: Urban Ink first hit the streets in September of 2007, and the positive response to the publication has exceeded even the most optimistic hopes and expectations of the publishers and editorial staff. Among the accolades Urban Ink Magazine is ranked among the 30 Most Noticeable Launches of 2007 by respected publishing resource, Samir Husni's Mr.Magazine.com. What has also exceeded expectations, is the widespread demographic to which the magazine appeals. Urban Ink's readership is 54-percent Black, 26-percent Latino, 23-percent White and 3-percent other. The split within the gender of the UI readership is 57-percent male and 43-percent female. Urban Ink also includes interviews and layouts of the most talented tattoo artists of color in America and around the world, as well as interesting and exciting personalities, who have spent numerous hours being marked by the ink gun. Urban Ink reports on and participates in urban culture events such as the Funk Master Flex Auto and Urban Culture Expo. Also included in the pages of Urban Ink are layouts of beautiful women, who show off plenty of their inked skin in order to bring an element of "eye candy" to the magazine. Because Urban Ink has made a point of being true to the Urban Culture and has offered the only forum for artists of color and their patrons to tell their story and show off their work, UI has gained a huge amount of credibility, acceptance and validation within the Urban population. This credibility has not gone unrecognized by important people within this community who are tattooed. The editor now gets contacted regularly by celebrities, who are looking to attach their names and image to the publication. Names that include Jermaine Dupri and Gym Class Heroes have sought to exhibit their ink and promote their projects in the magazine, and plans for future covers include a feature on Dr. Dre and his long-anticipated CD release.
