Final Opportunity to Become a Founder

This is Your Final Opportunity to become a

Founder of the LGBT Center of Raleigh

Thursday, June 30, 2011

To all our friends and supporters,

This is your LAST opportunity to become a member of our Founders Triangle!

As of Friday (July 1, 2011) the door will be closed to anyone who wanted to be included on our Founders Wall, which will be installed at our new location.

It's not yet too late to be among those who have made history by donating $100 or more to the LGBT Center of Raleigh. We currently have over 350 people who have made the commitment to support us, and you can still be a part of the group. Because of the generosity of these folks we have been able to move into a new facility which is almost three times the size of our previous home. We have instituted new programs such as our Gay & Gray Initiative, and we are planning for many more. We have been able to mount downtown Raleigh's first OutRaleigh celebration on Fayetteville Street, and we are able to plan for our annual fall festival known as Raleigh is Coming Out. And we have only just begun!

So far June has been our most successful fundraising month ever, having seen commitments in excess of $15,000. We would like to see that figure at $20,000 by Friday, and you can make that happen.

You can donate safely and securely on our web site, so click here to reserve your place on the Founders Wall. If you prefer, you can achieve Founders status by becoming a sustaining member and making 12 monthly payments of a minimum of $20 each. Either way you can join with us in assuring that the Center will continue to make a difference in the lives of the LGBT population of the Triangle and Beyond.

Thank you.

Love Knows no Boundaries – First Annual OBX Pride Festival in Nags Head, NC

HRC and ENC organizers attended the first Outer Banks (OBX) Pride held in Nags Head, NC last week to ask supporters to take action against the ant-LGBT constitutional amendment that seeks to ban gay and lesbian marriage in the state constitution. Saturday’s event on the Grounds of the First Colony Inn delivered a spectrum of entertainment and allowed vendors and exhibitors the opportunity to introduce their products and share information with the LGBTQ community and Allies.

One of our neighbors at this event was the Unitarian Universalists, who were able to make the trip to the OBX after their “Standing on the Side of Love” rally held in Charlotte, NC the previous day. Assisting in our Equality in Action postcard campaign, this group requested  postcards to share with friends and family who were unable to make it to OBX Pride.

While HRC and ENC staff and volunteers met and spoke with supporters of LGBT rights, we were also able to join the crowd with strong applause for performances by the likes of Britney Spears impersonator - Derrick Barry, Jerry Halliday - comedic puppeteer, Richard Cortez, The Dirty Girls Band and Team Don’t H8. Attendees were energetic, there was love in the air and everyone was eager to sign a postcard. At the end of the event we had 122 postcards from North Carolinians; 15 from our neighbors in Virginia managed to slip into this lot, proving love knows no boundaries!

Congratulations to the OBX Pride Planning Committee for delivering a very successful inaugural event!

Jim Fincher, Chairman
John Elijha McDonald, Vice Chair
Cory Hemilright, Vice Chair of Events
David Miller, Vice Chair of Outreach
Philip Brown, Vice Chair of Fundraising
Evan Tasios, Volunteer Coordinator

The three day event was attended by approximately 2,200 people who traveled from Raleigh, Greenville and Wilmington, NC; Norfolk and Richmond, VA; Charleston, SC; Miami, FL; Washington, D.C. and New York, NY.

Click here to view photos from this event: Set 1, Set 2, Set 3.
