This morning I spoke at a program for recent college graduates looking for editorial jobs. They asked astute questions about how we measure our work, define our success, chart our future. The panelists and I talked about metrics, traffic, and budgets. But we also spoke about knowing our readers, trusting our instincts, and being curious people. I was reminded of a comment a former boss of mine used to make all the time: "Where's the surprise?" she'd say. It drove us nuts -- surprise? what did she mean by surprise? -- but the comment still runs through my head multiple times a day, even years later. What are you, the creator, giving your audience that they didn't even know they wanted?

Happy creating!
